Research at our institute focuses on the four main topics listed below, which deal with the molecular characterization of events leading to cancer formation, progression and metastasis, the development of novel therapeutic concepts, and the influence of environmental factors on cancer development. The common goals are to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and cure.
Cellular and Molecular Tumorbiology (coordinated by Maria Sibilia, Univ. Prof. Dr., Head)
Main research area: Influence of acute and chronic inflammation on growth resp. cell death. Investigation of genetic polymorphisms as biomarkers for personal cancer risk, including the resulting prevention strategies.
Applied and Experimental Oncology (coordinated by Walter Berger, Univ. Prof. Dr.)
Main research area: Development and evaluation of novel anticancer compounds and/or therapy targets based on the precise elucidation of molecular factors underlying cancer development and progression. Elaboration of strategies to avoid therapy resistance against classical chemotherapy and novel targeted anticancer compounds.
Chemical Safety and Cancer Prevention (coordinated by Gergely Szakacs, Univ. Prof. PhD)
Main research area: Prevention of undesirable effects of chemicals and diagosis/therapy of intoxications.
Tumor Progression and Metastasis (coordinated by Wolfgang Mikulits, A.o. Univ. Prof.)
Main research area: How do tumor cells manage to invade in surrounding tissue and blood circulation to form metastases.
