Over the past decade the tumor specific gene-expression, metabolic pathways and signal transduction has been elucidated and is now used as targets for the determination of individual cancer risk, nutritional and pharmacological tumor prevention, diagnostic procedures and cancer therapy. The thesis program Experimental and Clinical Oncology is planned to cooperate with the N094 program "Malignant Diseases" and use common seminar courses. The thesis projects offered encompass translational and clinical projects investigating innovative approaches to cancer risk assessment, diagnosis, chemoprevention and therapy. In vitro and in vivo models are used to investigate the cellular mechanisms of carcinogenic and chemopreventive compounds as well as newly developed cancer therapeutics. Translational Research projects will develop diagnostic procedures, new therapies, and preventive strategies and intervention studies and Phase I clinical studies will be used to assess the impact of preventive strategies and to evaluate the suitability of diagnostic markers.). Finally, new therapeutic and diagnostic procedures are evaluated in clinical studies.
